Coalition Urges Sen. Schumer to Pass Bipartisan Preservation Bills

In a recent letter to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the Coalition for American Heritage urged the senator to pass a trio of historic preservation bills that boast strong bipartisan support. Read our letter to the senator here.

Coalition Urges Congress to Reauthorize the Historic Preservation Fund

Together with a coalition of leading historic preservation groups, the Coalition for American Heritage is urging Congress to pass H.R. 3350, a bill to reauthorize the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF). The bill would raise the authorized funding level of the HPF from $150 to $250 million and extend the authorization period from seven to ten years.

This legislation is critical because the HPF authorization is set to expire at the end of this fiscal year, September 30, 2023. Coalition Advises BLM on Care of Public Lands

The Coalition for American Heritage provided comments on the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) proposed rule to put land conservation on par with other land uses. The rule would direct land managers to identify landscapes and develop plans for restoration, prioritizing places based on land and water health, partnership opportunities, and benefits to local communities.

The Coalition supports the rule and proposes ways to clarify the language to best ensure the protection of public lands and cultural resources. Read our letter here.

Update from Washington: How the Supreme Court ruling and debt limit deal will impact preservation priorities

Coalition Requests $225 Million for Historic Preservation Fund

In written testimony to the Senate Appropriations Committee today, the Coalition for American Heritage requested $225 million for the Historic Preservation Fund, $3 million for the African American Burial Grounds Preservation Program, and $211 million each for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Coalition Advises NPS on Updating TCP Guidance

The Coalition for American Heritage submitted recommendations on the National Park Service’s plan to update its guidance on nominating traditional cultural properties. Read our letter for details on why we support the proposed revisions and how we think they could be further strengthened.

Update from Washington: Senators Seek Funding for Burial Grounds Program

We are grateful to the seven U.S. senators who urged the Appropriations Committee to provide $3 million in federal funding for the African American Burial Grounds Preservation Program. Read our newsletter for details.

Coalition Advises BOEM on Preserving Underwater Archaeology

The Coalition for American Heritage joined the Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology (ACUA) and the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) in advising the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) on how best to protect underwater archaeological resources.

In a comment letter to the agency, the preservation organizations highlighted the positive changes that the proposed regulations would make. They also suggested how revising some technical aspects of the regulations would better support the agency’s goal of strengthening preservation of underwater cultural heritage.

Senators Support Funding Burial Grounds Preservation Program

In a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee, led by Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), senators highlighted the importance of fully funding the African American Burial Grounds Preservation Program at the U.S. Department of the Interior. They asked the Appropriations Committee to provide $3 million in Fiscal Year 2024 to fund grant opportunities and technical assistance to local partners to research, identify, survey, and preserve these important and historic African American burial grounds.

The letter was signed by Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA). The Coalition for American Heritage is deeply grateful to these senators for their leadership on this important issue.
